XR Classroom at Calasanz Santurtzi

Innovation applied to vocational healthcare training

With more than 1,000 students and 13 vocational training programs across healthcare, community services, and administration, Calasanz Santurtzi has become a benchmark educational center in the Basque Country. Its commitment to innovation has materialized in the creation of an XR Classroom, equipped with VR simulators and interactive resources designed to transform healthcare education.
This initiative is part of a regional plan to modernize vocational training (VET) and prepare students with next-generation technical and digital skills.

The Challenge

Realistic practice for a demanding sector

Healthcare VET students need realistic practice in environments that mirror professional settings: from home assistance to institutional care. However, gaining regular access to clinical or residential facilities is often difficult.
At the same time, it was crucial to strengthen transversal skills such as empathy, emotional management, and healthcare communication, which are essential in working with dependent populations.

The Solution

An XR classroom designed for care

Thanks to funding from the Basque Government and collaboration with MetaMedicsVR, the school has equipped its new XR Classroom with cutting-edge devices and customized simulators for healthcare training.
The content includes immersive experiences in basic care, assisted mobility, support for dependent people, and the management of complex situations.
The classroom is structured into zones for practice, guided reflection, and peer co-evaluation, fostering active methodologies and student-centered learning.

“Virtual reality has transformed how we teach care. Our students train in simulated scenarios that replicate reality with precision, improving their confidence and competence from day one of practice.”
— Raúl Setien, Director of Innovation
