The context

Training that includes everyone, not just the clinicians

Clínica Asunción is a Basque-Country hospital that, like most, has to keep its staff trained on the things that matter most to patients. Traditional in-hospital training tends to split people up by role — doctors here, nursing there, auxiliaries somewhere else — and to teach them with fairly passive methods: a talk, a slideshow, a handout. Clínica Asunción chose to do the opposite: train the whole organisation, actively, on the skills everyone shares.

The training reached seven different roles — medicine, nursing, physiotherapy, administrative staff, nursing auxiliaries, porters and cleaning staff — with cases tailored to the protocols of Osakidetza, the Basque Health Service.

The challenge

Some skills can't be taught with a slideshow

The two themes the hospital chose are the clearest example. Effective communication and the detection of gender-based violence are not things you can learn from a handout — they live entirely in the conversation: reading a subtle signal, asking the right question without alarming the patient, handling a delicate exchange under pressure. Passive training rarely builds those reflexes, and it almost never lets staff actually practise them.

What we built

Two editions, two skills, every role practising

Clínica Asunción ran the training in two editions on the MetaMedicsVR AI Platform, where staff practise real conversations with AI virtual patients instead of sitting through a lecture:

  • First edition (2025): effective communication — over 70 professionals trained, across every role in the hospital.
  • Second edition (2026): detecting and preventing gender-based violence — over 50 professionals trained.
  • All cases tailored to the protocols of Osakidetza, the Basque Health Service, so the practice matches exactly how the team is expected to act.

Instead of separate, passive sessions, everyone practised the same cases — each person from their own position. The protocol stops being theory: it gets executed, assessed and improved.

Why it matters

Proof of whole-hospital, active learning — twice over

This is the first case to show active, conversational learning applied across an entire hospital — every role, not just the clinical ones — and the fact that it ran for a second edition the following year is the strongest proof there is that it worked. It shows how the AI Platform scales beyond the classroom and into the day-to-day of a working organisation.

If you recognise your own situation here, let's talk about how it could work for you.
