The context
A European project to strengthen healthcare teaching
EEDUSIM is a European project with one clear mission: to give healthcare educators the skills and tools to use clinical simulation as a cornerstone of training. Clinical simulation means practising real medical situations in a controlled setting — with role-play, mannequins or virtual scenarios — instead of learning only from books or by waiting for the right case to appear in a real ward.
The project was designed by a consortium of European universities and medical-simulation experts, with a multinational, multilingual approach so that the same training can reach teachers across borders. MetaMedicsVR joined as the project's technology partner, contributing the immersive virtual reality platform.
The challenge
Simulation works, but few teachers can actually use it
Simulation is one of the most powerful ways to prepare future health professionals, yet its use in everyday teaching is still limited. The barrier is rarely the method itself — it is that many educators lack the resources, the training or the access to the right technology to bring it into the classroom.
Research backs the value of getting this right. Studies on simulation in healthcare education consistently link it to better clinical skills, more confidence and a safer transition to real patients, because learners can repeat difficult situations and receive feedback without any risk to a real person.
What was missing for educators
- A shared, structured course on how to teach with simulation, not just how to use a single tool
- Hands-on practice in a safe environment, repeatable as many times as needed
- Access in several languages, so the same programme works across European countries
What we built
An immersive platform for real clinical decisions
As the technology partner, MetaMedicsVR developed an immersive virtual reality platform — a headset-based environment where users feel they are inside the clinical scene. Inside it, learners engage with realistic clinical cases, make the critical decisions a real situation would demand, and see the consequences play out, all in a safe space they can repeat as often as they need.
That platform sits inside a complete 80-hour course, organised into 8 units built by the consortium's experts. Each unit weaves together theory, hands-on practice and guided simulations, and combines virtual reality with augmented reality (digital information layered on top of the real world). The whole course is multilingual and designed for inclusive access across borders.
How it works
Theory, practice and guided simulation in one path
The course is built so a teacher moves from understanding to doing. Each of the 8 units follows the same rhythm, which keeps the learning consistent no matter the language or country.
- Theory: the concept and why simulation matters for that topic
- Hands-on practice: applying it directly, step by step
- Guided simulation: a realistic case in virtual reality, with decisions and feedback
- Transfer: turning the experience into something teachers can run with their own students
The goal is not just to train students with simulation, but to give their teachers the confidence to lead it themselves.
Why it matters
Educators who can pass the method on
By focusing on the teachers rather than only the students, EEDUSIM aims for an effect that lasts beyond a single course. A trained educator can bring simulation into their own classroom year after year, reaching far more learners than any one workshop could.
It is also a model that travels well. Because the programme is multilingual and delivered through an immersive platform, the same high-quality training can be shared across European universities without rebuilding it from scratch in each place — exactly the kind of repeatable, scalable approach MetaMedicsVR is designed to support.
